Also, be sure that
-the status picklist contains correct values
-the advanced status manager is not set
-the user does not have limitations on the status picklist

Are you working with the admin user?

The Status Manager (in italian Gestore Stati), if configured, defines linear or complex workflows based on the values of the Status field. It's an advanced tool you find on Settings.
